alright, here are some random questions:

1) how easy is it to get out of classes as a BSE? I want to try to get out of classes like COS 126 (ive done a lot of programming), MAT 201 (took it last year) and ORF 245 (if its a fundamental stats class). i heard advisors are usually pretty nice about this stuff, but anyone know any details?

2) and are any OAers totally new to hiking and outdoorsy stuff and whatnot? *raises hand shyly*

an optimistic hopeful :D [Aug. 24th, 2005|10:18 pm]

Hey.. I know this is probably annoying, but I'm a prospective student and I just have a question for all of you. If you find the post irritating feel free to ignore. :D

I'm a high school senior and obviously, interested in Princeton. I love Princeton-- it's been my dream since the 7th grade-- and would absolutely consider applying Early Decision, but I obviously would appreciate having the best chances possible of getting in. While I would apply ED if I had perfect stats, I don't. My grades are weak, my SATs are good, and my extracurriculars are relatively impressive.

Grades: 3.5/4.0 - I go to a magnet high school that I had to apply to get into... A lot harder than my public high school. I would've had a 4.0 at my public high school no doubt. All honors classes. Everyone in my school is psychotically competitive, and there are only about 50 people in my "academy" (the school is made up of seven academies; I'm in Medical) so I fall at the 50% mark, though we technically don't rank. Not impressive, really. My courseload for senior year is pretty hard... AP Bio, AP Music Theory, AP Calc, all that good stuff.

SATs: 730 writing, 700 math, 800 critical reading. I plan to retake them because, not to be conceited, but I have no idea how my writing score was so low. On all my practice tests and on the PSATs, I had a perfect scores. So we'll see. SAT IIs are okkkaaaaayyy... 670 Bio, 790 Lit, and 630 Math IIC, though I plan to retake the IIC because considering the advanced level of math (I took pre-calc my freshman year, which is "advanced" compared to my public high school) at my school, 630 is pretty darned pathetic.

Extracurriculars: Very strong in music, singing specifically... All-State soprano, Governor's School (very prestigious scholarship summer program), and lots of theater credits... Strong in soccer, though not necessarily planning to pursue it in college. Don't think I'm quite good enough, though I've been captain of my team since junior year and have been first team all-league as well as honorable mention all-county. I do a bunch of other stuff but I won't get into that here.

My sister, who currently attends UPenn, went through all this crap when she was in high school, and though she is hardly an admissions officer, she says that with my weak grades, I'd have less of a chance if I applied ED. She says that all the strongest applicants apply ED, so it'd be better to go into the regular decision pool.

Your thoughts? Sorry this is so long.

4 course limit for 1st semester? [Aug. 24th, 2005|10:04 pm]
Princeton University Class of 2009

Anybody know how serious this four-course limit for your first semester is? I really want to take 5 (well, I really want to take about 25, but I know 5 is already pushing it...) but I am wondering if they will let me. Maybe is it something you can just get around by registering for more than 4 courses and not mentioning it to your adviser?

Does anyone know if we've gotten our exact mailing addresses yet, and if so, what huge packet it was in? My synagogue does this thing where they send all college students birthday cards and stuff like that, which kind of needs my mailing address. Also, I went up to Princeton this past Saturday to do some stuff and I managed to get into my dorm room (they're using it for storage) which is in Buyers, and the Holder dorms are looking good, for those of you in there! I mean, I didn't know what they looked like before, but still.

Anyone interested in going to the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club show? NYC, Irving Plaza, 8:00 on Monday, September 26. Tickets cost about 20 bucks maybe?

So, who else is having problems picking fall seminars to apply for? I've narrowed it down to six, but there I'm stuck. They all look so good! I could just wait for spring and do it with my writing seminar, but the fall ones are so damn tempting. What did everyone else apply for and why? It might help me figure out which ones I want.

So I'm sure everyone's glad to know I just got my matriculation packet in the mail and I happen to live in Trenton, 20 minutes away from the school.
